Why Is My Laptop So Slow? Common Causes and Fixes

A slow laptop can be caused by software, storage, overheating, failing hardware or too many background apps. The right fix depends on the symptoms, age of the device and how the computer is used.
1. Mechanical hard drive instead of SSD
If the laptop still uses a traditional hard drive, an SSD upgrade can often provide the biggest performance improvement. It is usually more cost-effective than replacing a laptop that is otherwise suitable.
2. Too many startup apps
Cloud sync tools, printer utilities, updaters and security apps can all start with Windows. Reducing unnecessary startup items can help the laptop feel more responsive.
3. Malware or unwanted browser extensions
Pop-ups, fake warnings and redirects can slow a laptop down. A proper cleanup should include browsers, startup items and installed applications.
4. Overheating
If fans are loud or the laptop feels hot, the processor may reduce speed to protect itself. Cleaning dust and checking cooling can help.
